A
FAMILY IN MUSIC...
“I
have always felt very special coming from a family of performing artists,
but having the opportunity to share the stage with them professionally,
makes me feel quite unique!!”
My
sister, Paula Page, is the principal harpist of the Houston Symphony,
a position she has held for 24 years, and is also an Associate Professor
of Harp at Rice University and the University of Houston. She and I have
done extensive chamber music concerts in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
My mother, Glynn Page, is Principal Lecturer Emerita of the Carnegie Mellon
University School of Drama, teaching voice to the music theatre majors
from 1976-1997. While a student at The Curtis Institute of Music, I performed
a very special Mozart Mass in C Minor with the Philadelphia Concerto Soloists,
sharing the stage with my mother as the other soprano soloist. We also
shared the spotlight that evening with the Maestro on the podium - my
father, Robert Page.
Robert Page** is recognized as one of the world’s finest choral
conductors and is the recipient of the 1998 Pennsylvania Artist of the
Year Award. He is Music Director Emerita of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh,
and is also the Paul Mellon University Professor of Music at Carnegie
Mellon University. In our conductor/soprano roles, my father and I continue
to share so many wonderful musical performances with many of the major
symphonies here and in Europe - from Mendelssohn’s Elijah to Haydn’s
Creation to the Gorecki Symphony No. 3 and the Verdi Requiem. We’ve
even thrown in a pops concert now and then... e.g., belting out ‘My
Heart Belongs to Daddy’ with the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom
Festival!!
My son Alexander Gemignani won a Theatre World award for his performance
as John Hinkley in the Broadway production of Assassins in 2003. He has
been back on Broadway as the Beadle in Sweeney Todd; Jean Valjean
in Les Miz; the Boatman and Dennis in Sunday in
the Park wtih George; and will soon be starring in Sondheim's Road
Show at the Public Theatre. In 2005, we shared the stage in a wonderful
production of The Music Man at the Chautauqua Festival. Alexander
was Marcellus and I was Eulalie Shinn. Needless to say, it was the best
ever!! We had a ball!!
